My current project aims to use an image processing technique called active contours (or "snakes") to track solar flare ribbons throughout the evloution of a solar flare. Once this is achieved I then aim to overlay the tracked position of the footpoints onto magnetograms in the hope that this will enable the study of the realtionship between the flare ribbon expansion and the released magnetic energy.
